On Friday, February 26, BBC’s The One Show featured radio amateur Frank Bell G7CND, UK astronauts Helen Sharman GB1MIR and Tim Peake GB1SS along with the Oasis Academy Brightstowe ARISS contact

Frank is a retired Science teacher who was instrumental in the amateur radio linkup in 1991 between students at the Royal Grammar School, Guildford and the UK’s first astronaut Helen Sharman GB1MIR who was on the Mir Space Station. With Frank were two of his former pupils, Les and Pete, who took part in the contact nearly 25 years ago.

The Oasis Academy Brightstowe amateur radio contact with Tim Peake took place on February 19.

Media Accreditation Open for Space Station Crew News Conference, Interviews

NASA will host a news conference with a team of astronauts who will launch to the International Space Station this summer, including NASA’s Kate Rubins, at 2 p.m. EST Wednesday, March 9, at the agency’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The event will air live on NASA Television and the agency’s website following a 30-minute video of crew training.

Second cyberspace weapon system reaches Full Operational Capability status

Air Force Space Command achieved a significant milestone Feb. 12 when the Cyberspace Vulnerability Assessment/Hunter Weapon System reached Full Operational Capability status.

Achieving FOC means the CVA/H weapon system is fully capable to serve as the premier enclave defense platform for prioritized traffic in the Air Force Information Network. The CVA/H weapon system enables execution of vulnerability assessments, adversary threat detection and compliance evaluations.

CVA/H is a tool for cyber defense, used inside the boundaries of the defended cyber system. The Air Force equips its Cyber Protection Teams with the CVA/H weapon system.

Hubble’s Blue Bubble

The distinctive blue bubble appearing to encircle WR 31a is a Wolf–Rayet nebula — an interstellar cloud of dust, hydrogen, helium and other gases. Created when speedy stellar winds interact with the outer layers of hydrogen ejected by Wolf–Rayet stars, these nebulae are frequently ring-shaped or spherical.

Investigating airway inflammation

ESA astronaut Tim Peake and NASA astronaut Tim Kopra participated in the Airway Monitoring experiment in the Quest airlock this week.

Tim Peake posted this photo on his social media, commenting: "In the airlock at low pressure (517mmHg) to investigate airway inflammation."

Thick green fog of aurora

Aurora seen from the International Space Station by ESA astronaut Tim Peake.

Tim commented on the picture: "The ISS just passed straight through a thick green fog of aurora... eerie but very beautiful."

Tim's six-month mission to the International Space Station is named Principia, after Isaac Newton’s ground-breaking Naturalis Principia Mathematica, which describes the principal laws of motion and gravity.

He is performing more than 30 scientific experiments for ESA and taking part in numerous others from ESA’s international partners.

ESA and the UK Space Agency have partnered to develop many exciting educational activities around the Principia mission, aimed at sparking the interest of young children in science and space.

Eastern Desert

The Sentinel-2A satellite takes us over central-eastern Egypt with this image from 17 January.

Like most of Egypt’s landscape, the image is dominated by arid desert – namely the Eastern Desert between the Nile River the Red Sea. The distinctive pattern of water erosion from rivers and streams is clearly visible as they make their way towards the Nile, at which point the rolling sandy highlands drop abruptly at the Nile valley, visible along the bottom of the image.

Fields of intensive farming along the Nile appear red owing to this false-colour image being processed to include the near-infrared. The varying shades of red indicate how sensitive the multispectral instrument on Sentinel-2 is to differences in chlorophyll content, providing key information on plant health.

The Nile valley is one of the world’s most densely populated areas. The river is the primary source of water for both Egypt and Sudan’s populations, supporting life in an otherwise uninhabitable environment, as evident by the stark contrast between the colours of this image.

Zooming in along the bottom we can see clusters of black dots where cities and towns are located, in addition to the fields. In the lower right, just above the red area, there is an interesting pattern of roads from our bird’s-eye view – possibly a developing residential area.
