{"id":189044,"date":"2013-03-27T18:15:37","date_gmt":"2013-03-27T22:15:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.afspc.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123341934"},"modified":"2013-03-27T18:15:37","modified_gmt":"2013-03-27T22:15:37","slug":"sbirs-geo-2-launches-improves-space-based-capabilities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=189044","title":{"rendered":"SBIRS GEO-2 launches, improves space-based capabilities"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"float:left;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.afspc.af.mil\/news\/story.asp?id=123341934\"><img decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" style=\"margin-right:15px\" src=\"http:\/\/www.afspc.af.mil\/shared\/media\/photodb\/thumbnails\/2013\/03\/130319-F-JV311-01.jpg\"<\/img><\/a><\/div>\n<p>In support of the Buckley missile warning and awareness mission, the second Space-Based Infrared System geosynchronous earth orbit launched into space March 19 from Space Launch Complex 41 at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla. <\/p>\n<p>The satellite, called GEO-2, provides more advanced space-based capabilities than Defense Support Program satellites, which are being replaced by the GEO satellites after more than four decades in operation. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While DSP has been the workhorse for missile warning and missile defense for the last 40-plus years, SBIRS GEO takes us into the next generation with a revolutionary increase in detection capability,&#8221; said Col. DeAnna Burt, 460th Operations Group commander. &#8220;The successful launch of GEO-2 continues to bring greater detection capability to the Overhead Persistent Infrared enterprise.
