{"id":219345,"date":"2014-03-07T05:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-03-07T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"6289bab47b59ef8ebb64213673a8cb5e"},"modified":"2014-03-07T05:00:00","modified_gmt":"2014-03-07T09:00:00","slug":"margarita-island-venezuela","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=219345","title":{"rendered":"Margarita Island, Venezuela"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2014\/03\/margarita_island_venezuela\/14307331-1-eng-GB\/Margarita_Island_Venezuela_small.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"96\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nSituated in the southern Caribbean Sea about 20 km off of mainland Venezuela\u2019s coast, the island comprises two peninsulas linked by a long, narrow strip of land \u2013 called an isthmus.&nbsp;&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe eastern part of the island is home to most of the island\u2019s residents, while the Macanao peninsula to the west is dominated by a central mountain range.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nBetween the peninsulas and cut off from the open sea by the isthmus lies the La Restinga lagoon, a national park that appears as a dark green and blue area in this image.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nRecognised as a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar Convention, the area features picturesque mangroves and is an important feeding ground for birds such as herons and flamingos.
