Particles are seen in the cloud chamber as they ionise supersaturated alcohol vapour along their tracks. These tracks can then be observed as vapour mist of various shapes and forms.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe apparent void of space is actually awash in high-energy particle radiation \u2013 originating from both our own Sun and the wider Universe \u2013 which can have a harmful effect on delicate satellite components.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nElectrical, electronic and electromechanical components, the fundamental building blocks of any space mission, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Radiation_satellites_unseen_enemy\">are tested for this harsh environment<\/a> at both ESA\u2019s ESTEC technical centre in the Netherlands and by a network of external particle accelerator sites across Europe.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis cloud chamber was developed and manufactured as part of a Master\u2019s degree study by Mikko Laitinen at the University of Jyv\u00e4skyl\u00e4, Finland.
