NASA Deputy Administrator Fred Gregory announced
\nGeorge Reese, Assistant Administrator for Equal
\nOpportunity Programs, has accepted a detail assignment
\nwith the Department of Education\u00b9s White House
\nInitiatives Office for Historically Black Colleges and
\nUniversities (HBCU\u00b9s).
\n
\nReese will be working with the initiative\u00b9s director,
\nAmbassador Leonard Spearman, and the President’s Board
\nof Advisors on HBCU\u00b9s on how best to ensure the
\ninstitutions’ long-term viability and enhancement.<\/p>\n
“We’re glad to know that George’s energy and expertise
\nwill continue to be available to the government,” said
\nDeputy Administrator Gregory. “NASA has a long history
\nof encouraging and supporting education, and George’s
\nbackground will enhance the Administration’s commitment
\nto the future of Historically Black Colleges and
\nUniversities,” he said.<\/p>\n
Reese has been head of NASA\u00b9s Office of Equal
\nopportunity Programs since 1997. Before that he was
\nDeputy General Counsel, Associate General Counsel for
\nGeneral Law, and he served as a Senior Attorney and
\nAttorney-Advisor. He joined NASA in 1977.<\/p>\n
During his 25 years at NASA, Reese worked on numerous
\ncases related to equal opportunity and employment
\nissues. He was the NASA representative and U.S. delegate
\nto the Legal Subcommittee of the U.N. Committee on the
\nPeaceful Uses of Outer Space. He also served for many
\nyears as the Chairman of the NASA Contract Adjustment
\nBoard.<\/p>\n
Reese was born in Detroit and raised in Pennsylvania.
\nHe received his bachelor\u00b9s degree from Lincoln
\nUniversity, Pa. and his J.D. from the George Washington
\nUniversity National Law Center, Washington. He also
\nattended the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of
\nPublic and International Affairs.<\/p>\n
During the Vietnam War, he served as an officer in the
\nUnited States Army. Reese is married and has two sons.<\/p>\n
Associate Deputy Administrator Jim Jennings will serve
\nin an interim role as acting Assistant Administrator for
\nEqual Opportunity Programs until after the first of the
\nyear. “I know Jim will contribute much to our programs
\nand do an exemplary job in this acting capacity until
\nthe new Assistant Administrator is on board,” Gregory
