{"id":472454,"date":"2018-05-08T09:29:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-08T13:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?guid=9f5888bc1cee97122a22d61768dcdafd"},"modified":"2018-05-08T09:29:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-08T13:29:00","slug":"soyuz-revisited","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=472454","title":{"rendered":"Soyuz revisited"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2018\/05\/soyuz_revisited\/17503282-1-eng-GB\/Soyuz_revisited_small.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"96\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nThe last time ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen saw a Soyuz, he and his fellow crewmembers were making their fiery reentry to Earth in the reliable spacecraft, landing in the Kazakh steppe in the early hours of the morning on 12 September 2015.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nToday, nearly three years later Andreas reunites with the Soyuz TMA-18M capsule that launched him to space at the Danish Museum of Science and Technology in Copenhagen.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAndreas became Denmark\u2019s first astronaut when he embarked on the intense 10-day \u2018iriss\u2019 mission to the International Space Station in 2015.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Danish Museum of Science and Technology has acquired the Soyuz capsule and is unveiling it as part of the <a href=\"http:\/\/tekniskmuseum.dk\/det-sker\/udstillinger\/\">new exhibition \u2018To Space and Back\u2019<\/a> opening today.&nbsp; &nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAndreas spent 10 busy days in space testing new technologies and conducting scientific experiments for ESA. It was during \u2018iriss\u2019 that Andreas tested the time-saving hardware called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Human_Spaceflight\/Research\/Saving_time_in_space\">mobiPV<\/a>&nbsp;or Mobile Procedure Viewer.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOne of the highlights during Andreas\u2019 mission were the images of thunderstorms from space. He managed to record many kilometre-wide blue flashes around 18 km altitude, including a pulsating blue jet reaching 40 km. A <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/spaceinvideos\/Videos\/2016\/04\/Red_sprites_and_blue_jets\">video recorded by Andreas<\/a> as he flew over the Bay of Bengal at 28 800 km\/h on the Station shows the electrical phenomena clearly \u2013 a first of its kind.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe photographs and video were evidence of the scientific importance of studying hard-to-observe thunderstorms and other electrical activity in the upper atmosphere from space. It also confirmed the Space Station as a great vantage point 400 km above the clouds.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNow, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Human_Spaceflight\/Research\/Atmosphere_Space_Interactions_Monitor\">Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor or ASIM<\/a> is picking up where Andreas left off.
