{"id":565138,"date":"2019-01-08T10:24:00","date_gmt":"2019-01-08T14:24:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?guid=eaaf9f3f339b61bc1df59d37f632a81b"},"modified":"2019-01-08T10:24:00","modified_gmt":"2019-01-08T14:24:00","slug":"asim-in-action","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=565138","title":{"rendered":"ASIM in action"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/var\/esa\/storage\/images\/esa_multimedia\/images\/2019\/01\/asim_in_action\/19180750-1-eng-GB\/ASIM_in_action_small.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"95\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nThe Atmosphere-Space Interactions Monitor \u2013 ASIM \u2013 is performing well outside the European Columbus laboratory module on the International Space Station.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLaunched in April 2018, the storm-hunter is a collection of optical cameras, photometers and an X- and gamma-ray detector designed to look for electrical discharges born in stormy weather conditions that extend above thunderstorms into the upper atmosphere.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThese \u2018transient luminous events\u2019 sport names such as red sprites, blue jets and elves.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSatellites have probed them and observations have even been made from mountain tops but because they occur above thunderstorms they are difficult to study in greater detail from Earth.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nIn contrast, the International Space Station\u2019s low orbit covers a large part of Earth along the equator and is ideally placed to capture the sprites and jets.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen managed to catch the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esa.int\/spaceinvideos\/Videos\/2016\/04\/Red_sprites_and_blue_jets\">elves and sprites in action<\/a>&nbsp; with the help of a camera during his 2015 mission on board the International Space Station.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nNow months into regular operations, ASIM is performing well. Using data continuously collected by ASIM, researchers are investigating the relationship between terrestrial gamma-ray bursts, lightning and high-altitude electric discharges across all seasons, different latitudes and different times of day and night.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAside from being a little-understood phenomenon and part of our world, these powerful electrical charges can reach high above the stratosphere and have implications for how our atmosphere protects us from radiation from space.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nASIM is keeping researchers busy.
