Protective heat shields must be flown to protect any spacecraft making atmospheric entry but parachutes are then able to slow down and stabilise their descent.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nUp until now single parachutes have been employed for Mars missions, but in future a double parachute system offers a way to deliver a greater payload to the surface with enhanced trajectory control. A smaller, supersonic parachute for initial deceleration would be supplemented by a larger subsonic parachute for the descent phase.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nUK company <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vorticity-systems.com\/\">Vorticity Systems<\/a>&nbsp;has performed testing on a range of subsonic parachute shapes for Mars missions with support from ESA\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Shaping_the_Future\">Technology Development Element<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nTesting made use of a drone, a helicopter and low- and high-altitude balloons as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca\/eng\/solutions\/facilities\/wind_tunnel\/nine_metre.html\">9 x 9 m Canadian wind tunnel pictured<\/a>, plus a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca\/eng\/solutions\/facilities\/wind_tunnel\/2x3_metre.html\">smaller 2 x 3 m wind tunnel<\/a>&nbsp;at the same site \u2013 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Space_Engineering_Technology\/Shaping_the_Future\/Testing_unusually-shaped_parachutes\">in combination with high-fidelity software simulations<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nOne test even seeded the air around a parachute with tiny droplets of olive oil, which were laser-scanned to better view their flow pattern.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cThis was a very challenging project involving many tests at different facilities,\u201d comments Luca Ferracina, overseeing the work for ESA.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\u201cWe collected an enormous amount of data to help us to better understand the behaviour and performance of many parachute types.
