{"id":626116,"date":"2019-08-01T09:36:00","date_gmt":"2019-08-01T13:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=626116"},"modified":"2019-08-01T09:36:00","modified_gmt":"2019-08-01T13:36:00","slug":"pangaea-2019-dry-run","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=626116","title":{"rendered":"Pangaea 2019 dry run"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Pangaea_2019_dry_run_small.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"96\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nA new session of Pangaea geology field training moved to Lofoten, Norway, to scout for new traverses for the Pangaea analogue complement.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe team, consisting of planetary geologists and training experts, is preparing space farers for lunar exploration.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLofoten shares many geological features with lunar highlands, such as the Apollo 16 landing site, making it a perfect site to train astronauts on lunar geology.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nPangaea instructors Matteo Massironi, Riccardo Pozzobon and Fransceco Sauro, as well as petrology professor and local expert K\u00e5re Kullerud are guiding ESA astronaut Matthias Maurer through interesting geological sites in the Nusfjord, an area containing primitive crust rock formations, including anorthosites, which are known to be typical lunar highland rocks.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Pangaea course is designed to provide European astronauts with introductory and practical knowledge of Earth and planetary geology to prepare them to become effective partners of planetary scientists and engineers in designing the next exploration missions.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe course also aims to give astronauts a solid knowledge in the geology of the Solar System from leading European scientists.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.esa.int\/Our_Activities\/Human_and_Robotic_Exploration\/Caves\/What_is_Pangaea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">More about Pangaea<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.esa.int\/caves\/category\/pangaea\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Pangaea blog<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<p>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/europeanastronauttraining\/sets\/72157709413538117\/with\/48213558261\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Pangaea Flickr gallery<\/a>\n<\/p>\n<\/p>\n<p>\nCredits: ESA\u2013S.
