{"id":630850,"date":"2019-09-16T04:57:00","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T08:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=630850"},"modified":"2019-09-16T04:57:00","modified_gmt":"2019-09-16T08:57:00","slug":"a-dress-code-for-the-cave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=630850","title":{"rendered":"A dress code for the cave"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/A_dress_code_for_the_cave_small.jpg\" width=\"170\" height=\"96\" align=\"left\" hspace=\"8\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\nThe CAVES 2019 team completes the equipment and clothing fit check in preparation for their underground expedition.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAstronauts from five space agencies around the world take part in ESA\u2019s CAVES training course \u2013 Cooperative Adventure for Valuing and Exercising human behaviour and performance Skills.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe six cavenauts of this edition of CAVES are ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst, NASA astronauts Joe Acaba and Jeanette Epps, Roscosmos\u2019 cosmonaut Nikolai Chub, Canadian Space Agency astronaut Josh Kutryk and Japan\u2019s space agency \u00a0Takuya Onishi.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe cavenauts will wear a first layer of thin and thermal clothing. Pants, T-shirts, underwear and socks will keep them warm and dry. An antibacterial fabric will minimise smells and can be used for several days in a row. The second layer is a water-resistant and breathable over-suit.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nSpecial caving boots are another crucial element designed for muddy and wet terrain. The cavenauts will use certified helmets and gloves to protect their hands during tough climbing. Kneepads and elbow protection also come with the package.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nMuch like during a spacewalk, astronauts will use harnesses and carabiners to overcome obstacles in their way. About three kilometres of rope and 300 carabiners will be at their disposal as they climb, descend and move around the cave.\u00a0\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe three-week course prepares astronauts to work safely and effectively in multicultural teams in an environment where safety is critical.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAs they explore caves they encounter caverns, underground lakes and strange microscopic life.
