Defective mitochondria are characteristic of a number of age-related diseases, including cancer and Alzheimer&#8217;s. The MUSC team showed P17\/PERMIT transports the machinery that produces ceramide, a molecule that signals old mitochondria for destruction, to the mitochondria.
