{"id":644048,"date":"2020-01-23T08:45:00","date_gmt":"2020-01-23T12:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=644048"},"modified":"2020-01-23T08:45:00","modified_gmt":"2020-01-23T12:45:00","slug":"taal-volcano-blanketed-by-ash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=644048","title":{"rendered":"Taal volcano blanketed by ash"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/Taal_volcano_blanketed_by_ash_card_full.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n\tImage: <\/p>\n<p>The Philippines\u2019 Taal volcano erupted on 12 January 2020 \u2013 spewing an ash plume approximately 15 km high and forcing large-scale evacuations in the nearby area.<\/p>\n<p>This almost cloud-free image was captured today 23 January at 02:20 UTC (10:20 local time) by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission, and shows the island, in the centre of the image, completely covered in a thick layer of ash. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This optical image has also been processed using the mission\u2019s short-wave infrared band to show the ongoing activity in the crater, visible in bright red. Ash blown by strong winds can be seen in Agoncillo, visible southwest of the Taal volcano. Ash has also recorded in other areas of the Batangas province, as well as Manila and Quezon.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph\/index.php\/taal-volcano-bulletin-menu\/9682-taal-volcano-bulletin-23-january-2020-8-00-a-m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology<\/a> bulletin published today, sulphur dioxide emissions were measured at an average of around 140 tonnes. The Taal volcano still remains on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.phivolcs.dost.gov.ph\/index.php\/volcano-hazard\/volcano-alert-level\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">alert level four<\/a>, meaning an explosive eruption is possible in the coming hours or days. The highest alert level is five which indicates an eruption is taking place.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aa.com.tr\/en\/asia-pacific\/philippines-over-50-000-affected-by-volcano-eruption\/1708008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council<\/a>, over 50 000 people have been affected so far. In response to the eruption, the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service was <a href=\"https:\/\/emergency.copernicus.eu\/mapping\/list-of-components\/EMSR418\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">activated<\/a>.
