{"id":646097,"date":"2020-02-12T03:02:00","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T07:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=646097"},"modified":"2020-02-12T03:02:00","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T07:02:00","slug":"cork-vs-reentry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=646097","title":{"rendered":"Cork vs. reentry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Cork_vs._reentry_card_full.jpg\" alt=\"Cork vs. reentry\" \/><br \/>\n\tImage: <\/p>\n<p>The cork heat shield of ESA\u2019s Qarman CubeSat burning away in simulated atmospheric reentry conditions, during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vki.ac.be\/index.php\/research-consulting-mainmenu-107\/facilities-other-menu-148\/plasma-facilities\/71-1200-kw-induction-plasmatron\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">ground testing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Due to be deployed next week from the International Space Station, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.qarman.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Qarman<\/a>\u00a0(QubeSat for Aerothermodynamic Research and Measurements on Ablation) will gather data on atmospheric reentry using inbuilt temperature and pressure sensors and a spectrometer.<\/p>\n<p>Qarman\u2019s nose is made from aerospace-quality cork. As seen in the image here, it burns up then flakes away \u2013 but this is as intended by its designers. The loss of burnt material carries away unwanted heat with it.
