{"id":655922,"date":"2020-05-26T07:39:03","date_gmt":"2020-05-26T11:39:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=655922"},"modified":"2020-05-26T07:39:03","modified_gmt":"2020-05-26T11:39:03","slug":"russia-says-us-making-unacceptable-demands-on-open-skies-treaty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=655922","title":{"rendered":"Russia says US making \u2018unacceptable\u2019 demands on Open Skies treaty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" src=\"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/fighter-jets-surveillance-aircraft.jpg\" class=\"attachment-large size-large wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" style=\"float:left;margin:0 15px 15px 0\" data-full-width=\"1920\" data-full-height=\"1080\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Russia will continue to observe a post-Cold War surveillance treaty even if the United States pulls out, officials said on Friday while accusing Washington of sowing discord and making \u201cunacceptable\u201d demands.<\/p>\n<p>The Open Skies treaty allows its 34 full members across Europe, Canada and the former Soviet Union to carry out unarmed surveillance flights over other member countries at short notice.<\/p>\n<p>But US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday he planned to pull out of the accord, the latest in a series of US withdrawals from major international agreements.<\/p>\n<p>Washington accused Russia of failing to follow the treaty\u2019s rules by blocking flights \u2014 claims denied by Moscow.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said Washington has put forth unacceptable demands for Moscow to meet or it will pull out in six months.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe conditions the US has presented are absolutely unacceptable\u2026 they are senseless, they are unfounded,\u201d Ryabkov told a press conference, though adding that Russia is ready to \u201ccontinue dialogue\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He said Trump\u2019s announcement was a \u201csurprise\u201d and accused Washington of \u201csowing discord and uncertainty among its own allies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The only thing the US wants, he said, is \u201cfor us to stand at attention and then march in the direction they point.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko promised Russia would continue to honour its commitments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs long as the treaty is in force, we intend to fully follow all the rights and obligations that apply to us from this treaty,\u201d he told RIA Novosti news agency.<\/p>\n<p>The treaty, which was signed in 1992 and came into force in 2002, is seen as an important tool to prevent conflicts by allowing nations to monitor weapon build-ups.<\/p>\n<p>Grushko said Russia was \u201cacting on the basis that all the other countries will act in the same way\u201d and \u201ctake a conscientious approach to the obligations of parties to this treaty\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Russian diplomat said the US pullout would damage European security and harm the interests of US allies.<\/p>\n<p>China, which is not a party to the treaty, expressed \u201cdeep regret\u201d over the US move, calling it a \u201cdisplay of the United States\u2019 entrenched Cold War mentality\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The withdrawal \u201cwill have a negative impact on the international arms control and disarmament process,\u201d foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian said at a regular press briefing in Beijing on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>&#013;<br \/>\n&#013;<br \/>\n&#013;<br \/>\n Click here for original story, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defencetalk.com\/russia-says-us-making-unacceptable-demands-on-open-skies-treaty-75641\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">Russia says US making \u2018unacceptable\u2019 demands on Open Skies treaty<\/a>&#013;<br \/>\n&#013;<br \/>\n&#013;<br \/>\nSource: Air Force News&#013;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Russia will continue to observe a post-Cold War surveillance treaty even if the United States pulls out, officials said on Friday while accusing Washington of sowing discord and making \u201cunacceptable\u201d&hellip;
