{"id":697813,"date":"2021-08-02T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2021-08-02T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=697813"},"modified":"2021-08-02T06:00:00","modified_gmt":"2021-08-02T10:00:00","slug":"solar-orbiters-second-venus-flyby","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=697813","title":{"rendered":"Solar Orbiter\u2019s second Venus flyby"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/Solar_Orbiter_s_second_Venus_flyby_card_full.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Visualisation of ESA\u2019s Solar Orbiter spacecraft flying by Venus on 9 August 2021.The spacecraft will make numerous gravity assist flybys at Venus to bring it closer to the Sun and to tilt its orbit in order to observe our star from different perspectives.<\/p>\n<p>Solar Orbiter\u2019s path around the Sun has been chosen to be \u2018in resonance\u2019 with Venus, which means that it will return to the planet\u2019s vicinity every few orbits and can again use the planet\u2019s gravity to alter or tilt its orbit. Initially Solar Orbiter will be confined to the same plane as the planets, but each encounter of Venus will increase its orbital inclination. By 2025 it will make its first solar pass at 17\u00ba inclination, increasing to 33\u00ba by the end of the decade, bringing even more of the polar regions into direct view.
