{"id":717015,"date":"2022-02-18T10:12:00","date_gmt":"2022-02-18T14:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=717015"},"modified":"2022-02-18T10:12:00","modified_gmt":"2022-02-18T14:12:00","slug":"getting-ready-for-lunar-orbit","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=717015","title":{"rendered":"Getting ready for lunar orbit"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Getting_ready_for_lunar_orbit_card_full.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><br \/>\n\tImage:<\/p>\n<p>ESA astronaut Alexander Gerst visited Thales Alenia Space in Turin recently to test out and provide feedback on accommodations for the next human outpost in space, the lunar Gateway. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As the name implies, the Gateway will be located within the Moon\u2019s orbit and is being built by Thales Alenia Space on behalf of ESA. Among its components is the International Habitation Module or I-Hab.<\/p>\n<p>As crew quarters are designed with humans in mind, Alex both toured the mock-up and stepped into the crew quarter simulator to provide some experienced feedback. After two missions to the International Space Station \u2013 Blue Dot (2014) and Horizons (2018) \u2013 totalling 362 days in space, Alex is no stranger to living in special conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Using virtual gear, Alex experienced an immersive environment representing the interior of I-Hab, as if he were present on the lunar Gateway in orbit around the Moon. What did he think?<\/p>\n<p>Overall, the feedback was positive. Alex provided some recommendations that will help Thales Alenia Space\u2019s design team improve the next iterations.<\/p>\n<p>Alex and fellow ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano similarly assisted <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.esa.int\/exploration\/virtual-reality-session-with-esa-astronauts-for-gateway-design\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">this process in 2021<\/a>, but due to Covid-19 restrictions were only able to do so remotely.<\/p>\n<p>Involving astronauts in the module design process allows engineers to capitalise on the astronauts\u2019 experience aboard the International Space Station. Their feedback will guide upcoming design phases, to support a user-centered approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cExciting to see and work on the future of lunar exploration,\u201d said Alex. \u201cThe Gateway will be different to the International Space Station but an evolution of over two decades of living and working in low-Earth orbit.
