The\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/esaoperations\/status\/1624901825785724929\" title=\"ESA Operations shares meteoric prediction\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">predicted time and location<\/a> of the impact (02:50 &#8211; 03:03 UTC, above northern France) were made possible with observations by European astronomer <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarneczky\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kriszti\u00e1n S\u00e1rneczky<\/a>\u00a0using the 60 cm Schmidt telescope from the <a href=\"http:\/\/piszkesteto.konkoly.hu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Piszk\u00e9stet\u0151 Observatory<\/a>\u00a0in Hungary. 2023 CX1 is the second impactor discovered by Kriszti\u00e1n, after the\u00a0<a href=\"\/Space_Safety\/Planetary_Defence\/Fifth_asteroid_ever_discovered_before_impact\" title=\"Fifth asteroid ever discovered before impact\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">impact of 2022 EB5<\/a> less than a year ago. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The last three predicted impacts have all occurred in the last 12 months\u2013 an encouraging illustration of how asteroid detection capabilities are rapidly advancing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>What happened?<\/b><\/p>\n<p>At 20:18:07 UTC on 12 February 2023, the new asteroid (now officially designated\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neo.ssa.esa.int\/search-for-asteroids?sum=1&amp;des=2023CX1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">2023 CX1<\/a> but initially designated Sar2667 by its discoverer) was imaged by the Piszk\u00e9stet\u0151 Observatory. Once a second observation was taken, it was reported to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.minorplanetcenter.net\/iau\/mpc.html\" title=\"Minor Planet Center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Minor Planet Center<\/a>\u00a0at 20:49 UTC.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>About 40 minutes later, follow-up observations reported by the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.astro.hr\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Vi\u0161njan Observatory<\/a>\u00a0in Croatia confirmed the object. At this point various impact assessment systems around the globe calculated a 100% impact probability, expected above the English Channel between 02:00 &#8211; 04:00 UTC. The asteroid was estimated to be around one metre in diameter and posed no threat to people or property.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Over the next seven hours, astronomers around the globe observed the Earth-bound object and pinpointed its \u2018impact corridor\u2019 over the Channel with a trajectory going from west to east. The object continued to be observed until just ten minutes before impact, only five minutes before it fell into Earth\u2019s shadow becoming \u2018invisible\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On impact the beautiful fireball lit up the skies\u00a0within the expected time window (at 02:59 UTC) and location. Observations came mostly from southern UK and France but also from Belgium, the Netherlands and even Germany. It is likely that some fragments of the meteoroid could have survived its atmospheric journey and landed somewhere onshore, close to the coast north of Rouen in Normandy, France.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The team at ESA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"\/Space_Safety\/About_asteroids_and_Planetary_Defence\" title=\"Planetary Defence Office\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Planetary Defence Office<\/a> contributed to this historic event both with timely notifications from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/neo.ssa.esa.int\/-\/new-imminent-impactor-found-by-european-astronomer\" title=\"New imminent impactor found by European astronomer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">\u2018Meerkat\u2019 warning system<\/a> and use of a network of optical telescopes established for just these occasions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As it becomes more common that we can predict these small, stunning shooting stars in our skies, more people can be in the right place at the right time to witness a phenomenon only few have been lucky enough to spot before.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, one day we\u2019ll find an imminent impactor that isn\u2019t one metre in size, but perhaps 100.
