These studies will be done on Earth without the need for samples and data from astronauts.<\/p>\n<p>Collectively, these studies will help measure physiological and psychological responses to physical and mental challenges that astronauts may encounter during spaceflight.\u00a0With this information, NASA may be better able to mitigate risks and protect astronaut health and performance during future long-duration missions\u00a0to the International Space Station, the Moon, Mars, and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The selected research projects\u00a0were chosen from 60 proposals submitted in response to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nspires.nasaprs.com\/external\/solicitations\/summary!init.do?solId=%7bBF80387F-7098-5DEA-AFED-B8723AFC1FC8%7d&amp;path=open\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2023 Human Exploration Research Opportunities, Appendix A<\/a> solicitation.\u00a0They will\u00a0address numerous spaceflight risks\u00a0related to muscle and bone health,\u00a0sex differences,\u00a0crew autonomy and behavior,\u00a0balance and disorientation, and\u00a0inflammation of the brain or spinal cord.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Proposals were independently reviewed by subject matter experts in academia, industry, and government using a dual anonymous peer review process to assess scientific merit. Top scoring proposals were assessed by NASA for relevance to the agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/humanresearchroadmap.nasa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human Research Roadmap<\/a>\u00a0before final selections were made.\u00a0The cumulative award totals about $1.2 million in funding, spread across the projects. Funding for each project will last up to one year.<\/p>\n<p>The selected investigators and their teams are:\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Heather\u00a0Allaway, Louisiana State University and A&amp;M College,\u00a0<em>\u201cA time course of bone microarchitectural and material property changes in male and female mice during simulated unloading and spaceflight.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Kelly Crowe, Xavier University,\u00a0<em>\u201cAssessment of Sialylation in Skeletal Muscle Atrophy due to Simulated Microgravity.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Anthony Lau, College of New Jersey,\u00a0<em>\u201cEffects of Acute and Protracted Proton Radiation Exposure on Bone Health.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Ranjana\u00a0Mehta, Texas A&amp;M Engineering Experiment Station,\u00a0<em>\u201cCharacterizing and mitigating the interactive impacts of fatigue- and altered gravity-related stressors on sensorimotor, behavioral, and operational outcomes.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Kathleen Mosier,\u00a0Teamscape\u00a0LLC,\u00a0<em>\u201cNegotiating Crew Autonomy during Space Operations.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Talmo\u00a0Pereira, Salk Institute for Biological Studies,\u00a0<em>\u201cAutomated deep learning for spaceflight rodent behavior quantification and health phenotyping.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Shubhankar\u00a0Suman, Georgetown University,\u00a0<em>\u201cSenescent cell targeting to alleviate space radiation-induced neuroinflammation.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Danyal\u00a0Turkoglu, Ultra Safe Nuclear Corporation \u2013 Space,\u00a0<em>\u201cRadioisotope to Enable X-Ray Based Inflight Space Radiology.\u201d<\/em>\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><code>______<\/code><\/p>\n<p>NASA\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/hrp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Human Research Program<\/a>, or HRP, pursues the best methods and technologies to support safe, productive human space travel. Through science conducted in laboratories, ground-based analogs, and the International Space Station, HRP scrutinizes how spaceflight affects human bodies and behaviors. Such research drives HRP\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/humans-in-space\/nasas-human-research-program-three-steps-to-mars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">quest<\/a>\u00a0to innovate ways that keep astronauts healthy and mission-ready as space travel expands to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.<\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"nasa-gb-align-full
