The Astronomical Society of the Pacific (ASP), established in 1889, is a nonprofit organization that uses astronomy to increase the understanding and appreciation of science and to advance science and science literacy. This year, the ASP awarded the\u00a02023 Gordon Myers Amateur Achievement Award<\/a>\u00a0to NASA Volunteer\u00a0Dan Caselden<\/a>\u00a0for \u201creshaping the understanding of what is possible in volunteer-research\u201d.<\/p>\n

A Principal Software Engineer at Netskope by trade, Caselden began his citizen science journey when NASA\u2019s\u00a0Backyard Worlds: Planet 9<\/a>\u00a0citizen science project caught his eye on\u00a0Reddit. Together with fellow data scientist,\u00a0Paul Westin, Caselden created a new,\u00a0efficient visualization tool, called\u00a0WiseView,<\/a>\u00a0to improve the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 search.\u00a0 Caselden\u2019s work on WiseView\u2014and his subsequent work applying machine learning to search for Jupiter-like objects called brown dwarfs\u2014has\u00a0led him to co-author\u00a019 scientific publications<\/a>\u00a0so far with multiple research teams.<\/p>\n

Caselden will be honored at at an in-person ASP Awards Gala on Saturday,\u00a0\u00a0November 11, 2023 at the Grand Bay Hotel San Francisco in Redwood City, California.\u00a0<\/p>\n
