The annual Halloween pumpkin-carving contest at NASA\u2019s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California may be all in good fun, but to the 200 or so participants, it\u2019s also serious business. Participants carve them on their breaks \u2013 60 minutes of frantic sawing and drilling that sends vegetable detritus flying on a patio at JPL. (This year, one team had a minute-by-minute spreadsheet to make sure they stayed on schedule.)<\/p>\n<p>Carving complete, engineers race into two conference rooms in a nearby building to install the pumpkins into displays of up to 4 feet by 4 feet square. Non-pumpkin materials \u2013 motorized parts, lights, often elaborate props, and painted backdrops \u2013 can be prepared beforehand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not really a pumpkin-carving contest in the traditional sense. It\u2019s a pumpkin art installation event with very few rules,\u201d said Peter Waydo, who manages JPL\u2019s spacecraft mechanical engineering section and emcees the carving. He\u2019s been participating since the event began in 2011. \u201cThis is something everybody looks forward to every year \u2013 it just lets their creative juices flow completely unrestricted from the rules and processes we\u2019re normally bound by.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For the 2023 event, more than two dozen teams produced displays. They ranged from a Barbenheimer-themed \u201catomic makeover\u201d featuring a mirrored disco-ball pumpkin to a space octopus emerging from a Jupiter-colored pumpkin to greet <a href=\"https:\/\/europa.nasa.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA\u2019s Europa Clipper<\/a> spacecraft, and there were references to Taylor Swift, \u201cDune,\u201d and the agency\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/webb.nasa.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">James Webb Space Telescope<\/a>. All of the creations were on display for fellow engineers, scientists, technicians, and other JPL employees to admire.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, it wouldn\u2019t be a competition without winners. A panel of judges named the year\u2019s top six, with three from each of the two sections of engineers that participate. A display re-creating favorite items from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpl.nasa.gov\/virtual-tour\/?s=pano506\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">JPL\u2019s museum<\/a> and an interactive Indiana Jones-themed display both won first. Second went to the Deep Squash Network \u2013 a spoof on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/directorates\/somd\/space-communications-navigation-program\/what-is-the-deep-space-network\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA\u2019s Deep Space Network<\/a>, which enables spacecraft to communicate with Earth \u2013 and to a creation involving a descendent of <a href=\"https:\/\/mars.nasa.gov\/technology\/helicopter\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NASA\u2019s Ingenuity Mars Helicopter<\/a> on the fictional planet Arrakis. The two third-place winners were an eyeball-pumpkin that resembled Las Vegas\u2019 Sphere and the Barbenheimer display.<\/p>\n<p>The event comes on a special day for the lab, which, founded Oct. 31, 1936, was celebrating its 87<sup>th<\/sup> birthday.<\/p>\n<p>Additional photos from the pumpkin competition are available on <a
