The first images returned by Lucy reveal that the small main belt asteroid Dinkinesh is actually a binary pair.<\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"hds-media hds-module wp-block-image\">\n<div class=\"margin-left-auto margin-right-auto nasa-block-align-inline\">\n<div class=\"hds-media-wrapper margin-left-auto margin-right-auto\">\n<figure class=\"hds-media-inner hds-cover-wrapper hds-media-ratio-fit \"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1000\" src=\"\" class=\"attachment-2048x2048 size-2048x2048\" alt=\"\" loading=\"eager\" style=\"object-position: 50% 50%;object-fit: cover\" \/><\/figure><figcaption class=\"hds-caption padding-y-2\">\n<div class=\"hds-caption-text p-sm margin-0\">This image shows the \u201cmoonrise\u201d of the satellite as it emerges from behind asteroid Dinkinesh as seen by the Lucy Long-Range Reconnaissance Imager (L\u2019LORRI), one of the most detailed images returned by NASA\u2019s Lucy spacecraft during its flyby of the asteroid binary. The image has been sharpened and processed to enhance contrast.<\/div>\n<div class=\"hds-credits\">NASA\/Goddard\/SwRI\/Johns Hopkins APL\/NOAO<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u201cDinkinesh really did live up to its name; this is marvelous,\u201d said Hal Levison, referring to the meaning of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/nasas-lucy-asteroid-target-gets-a-name\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dinkinesh<\/a> in the Amharic language, \u201cmarvelous.\u201d Levison is principal investigator for Lucy from the Boulder, Colorado, branch of the San-Antonio-based Southwest Research Institute. \u201cWhen Lucy was originally selected for flight, we planned to fly by seven asteroids. With the addition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/nasas-lucy-team-announces-new-asteroid-target\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dinkinesh<\/a>, two <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/missions\/lucy\/nasas-lucy-mission-confirms-discovery-of-eurybates-satellite\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Trojan<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/centers-and-facilities\/goddard\/nasas-lucy-team-discovers-moon-around-asteroid-polymele\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">moons<\/a>, and now this satellite, we\u2019ve turned it up to 11.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In the weeks prior to the spacecraft\u2019s encounter with Dinkinesh, the Lucy team had wondered if Dinkinesh might be a binary system, given how Lucy\u2019s instruments were seeing the asteroid\u2019s brightness changing with time. The first images from the encounter removed all doubt. Dinkinesh is a close binary. From a preliminary analysis of the first available images, the team estimates that the larger body is approximately 0.5 miles (790 m) at its widest, while the smaller is about 0.15 miles (220 m) in size.<\/p>\n<p>This encounter primarily served as an in-flight test of the spacecraft, specifically focusing on testing the system that allows Lucy to autonomously track an asteroid as it flies past at 10,000 mph, referred to as the terminal tracking system.<\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"hds-media hds-module wp-block-image\">\n<div class=\"margin-left-auto margin-right-auto nasa-block-align-inline\">\n<div class=\"hds-media-wrapper margin-left-auto margin-right-auto\">\n<figure class=\"hds-media-inner hds-cover-wrapper hds-media-ratio-cover \"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"\" class=\"attachment-2048x2048 size-2048x2048\" alt=\"An animated gif of a a series of image taken from the Lucy spacecraft of a pair of asteroids named Dinkinesh. They indicate that the terminal tracking system worked as intended, even when the universe presented us with a more difficult target than we expected,\u201d said Tom Kennedy, guidance and navigation engineer at Lockheed Martin in Littleton, Colorado. \u201cIt\u2019s one thing to simulate, test, and practice. It\u2019s another thing entirely to see it actually happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While this encounter was carried out as an engineering test, the team\u2019s scientists are excitedly poring over the data to glean insights into the nature of small asteroids.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe knew this was going to be the smallest main belt asteroid ever seen up close,\u201d said\u00a0Keith Noll, Lucy project scientist from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/goddard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">NASA\u2019s Goddard Space Flight Center<\/a> in Greenbelt, Maryland. \u201cThe fact that it is two makes it even more exciting. In some ways these asteroids look similar to the near-Earth asteroid binary <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/solar-system\/asteroids\/didymos\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Didymos and Dimorphos that DART saw<\/a>, but there are some really interesting differences that we will be investigating.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It will take up to a week for the team to downlink the remainder of the encounter data from the spacecraft. The team will use this data to evaluate the spacecraft\u2019s behavior during the encounter and to prepare for the next close-up look at an asteroid, the main belt asteroid Donaldjohanson, in 2025.
