{"id":772573,"date":"2023-11-12T14:37:58","date_gmt":"2023-11-12T18:37:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=772573"},"modified":"2023-11-12T14:37:58","modified_gmt":"2023-11-12T18:37:58","slug":"schriever-hosts-stem-day-event-for-local-students-air-force-space-command-archived-article-display","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=772573","title":{"rendered":"Schriever hosts STEM day event for local students > Air Force Space Command (Archived) > Article Display"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<br \/><\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n            <strong>SCHRIEVER AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. &#8212; <\/strong> <\/p>\n<p>More than 60 middle school students from James Irwin Charter Academy, Colorado Springs, attended a science, technology, engineering and mathematics event hosted by the 50th Space Wing Nov. 14 at the fitness center.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really exciting to get to share what we do here,\u201d said Jan Devitt, 50th Space Wing community support coordinator. \u201cNot a lot of people know about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The event included six different booths showcasing basic orbital mechanics, Newton\u2019s laws, Kepler\u2019s laws, virtual reality, how radio frequencies can be used to control satellites, send communications and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u00a0Col. Jack Fischer, 50th Space Wing vice commander, briefed the students about STEM and shared some of his experiences as an astronaut.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Kids] are our future,\u201d he said. \u201cIf we don\u2019t inspire them to get into STEM and tackle those hard problems, we\u2019re going to lose. STEM subjects are usually tough in school, so we have to show them how cool it can be, what amazing things they can accomplish if they focus on that.
