{"id":774245,"date":"2023-11-21T10:01:50","date_gmt":"2023-11-21T15:01:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=774245"},"modified":"2023-11-21T10:01:50","modified_gmt":"2023-11-21T15:01:50","slug":"cairt-and-wivern-earth-explorer-candidates-go-forward-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=774245","title":{"rendered":"Cairt and Wivern Earth Explorer candidates go forward"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n\t<span class=\"pillar article__item\">Applications<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>21\/11\/2023<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<span><span id=\"viewcount\">441<\/span><small> views<\/small><\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span><span id=\"ezsr_total_25205878\">16<\/span><small> likes<\/small><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>ESA has reached a significant milestone in its commitment towards a deeper understanding of Earth&#8217;s dynamic processes and addressing pressing environmental challenges with the selection of two new candidates \u2013 Cairt and Wivern \u2013 to progress to the next development phase as part of the process of realising the Agency\u2019s eleventh Earth Explorer satellite mission.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The decision comes on the heels of the User Consultation Meeting held in October, at which four mission concepts were scrutinised by the scientific community. Following this all-important event, ESA\u2019s Advisory Committee for Earth Observation recommended the Cairt and Wivern concepts be selected for the next phase of development.<\/p>\n<p>Today, ESA\u2019s Programme Board for Earth Observation formally agreed to proceed on the basis of the Committee\u2019s recommendation.<\/p>\n<p>ESA\u2019s Director of Earth Observation Programmes, Simonetta Cheli, said, \u201cAll four proposed mission ideas have been studied intensively over the last two years. Each of the concepts is dedicated to pioneering scientific research that contributes to a better understanding of our planet and its intricate systems.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were extremely impressed by all four candidates, and I would personally like to thank the teams for their dedication and intense work to transform the proposed ideas into competitive mission concepts during this phase in the process.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHowever, the results of the initial assessment pushed the Cairt and Wivern concepts to the top, based on the new science they promise to yield and the innovative space technology they would demonstrate, while reinforcing ESA\u2019s role as a global leader in Earth observation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBoth concepts will now undergo further development. We will then go through the procedure of selecting one mission to be implemented as Earth Explorer 11 in 2025, with a view to launching the successful mission in the 2032\u201333 timeframe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>ESA&#8217;s Earth Explorers, which are developed within the FutureEO programme, foster scientific excellence by developing innovative missions that investigate various aspects of Earth&#8217;s environment.<\/p>\n<p>The two Earth Explorer 11 mission concepts promise to build on the success of missions that provide or are set to provide vital data for scientific research.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"article__image article__image--left\"><figcaption class=\"image__caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEarth Explorer 11 candidate mission Cairt<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cairt \u2013 short for changing-atmosphere infrared tomography \u2013 would provide the measurements needed to make a necessary step change in understanding the links between climate change, atmospheric chemistry and dynamics in the altitude range of about 5 to 115 km.<\/p>\n<p>It would focus on the processes that couple atmospheric circulation, composition and regional climate change, providing critical observations not available from existing or planned satellite missions.<\/p>\n<p>Cairt would be the first limb-sounder with imaging Fourier-transform infrared technology in space.<\/p>\n<p>Wivern \u2013 short for wind velocity radar nephoscope \u2013 would provide the first measurements of wind within clouds and precipitation systems.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"article__image article__image--right\"><figcaption class=\"image__caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tEarth Explorer 11 candidate mission Wivern<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It would also deliver profiles of rain, snow and ice water.
