This asteroid was discovered about 3 hours before impact, making it the 8<sup>th<\/sup> asteroid to be discovered before impacting Earth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The object belonged to the Apollo class of Asteroids and had an estimated diameter between 0.7 and 1.6 m (2.23 \u2013 5.2 feet).<\/p>\n<p>2024 BX1 was discovered about 150 minutes before impact by astronomer Kriszti\u00e1n S\u00e1rneczky at GINOP-KHK, Piszkesteto Station in Hungary. <\/p>\n<p>This is the third discovery of Earth\u2019s impactor made by S\u00e1rneczky. His previous discoveries were 2022 EB2 which impacted Earth\u2019s atmosphere southwest of Jan Mayen island in the Arctic Ocean on March 21, 2022, and 2023 CX1 which impacted over the English Channel, between England and France on February 13, 2023.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" data-perfmatters-preload=\"\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"915\" height=\"597\" src=\"https:\/\/watchers.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/asteroid-2024-bx1-orbit-diagram.webp\" alt=\"asteroid 2024 bx1 orbit diagram\" class=\"wp-image-179989\" srcset=\"https:\/\/watchers.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/asteroid-2024-bx1-orbit-diagram.webp 915w, https:\/\/watchers.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/asteroid-2024-bx1-orbit-diagram-300x196.webp 300w, https:\/\/watchers.news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/asteroid-2024-bx1-orbit-diagram-768x501.webp 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 915px) 100vw, 915px\"\/><\/figure>\n<p>Asteroid 2024 BX1 disintegrated just west of Berlin but it\u2019s likely some pieces of it survived the entry.<\/p>\n<p><center><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Asteroid?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Asteroid<\/a> 2024 BX1 was first discovered by <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/sarneczky?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@sarneczky<\/a> at Piszk\u00e9stet\u0151 Station in Hungary about 3 hours before it burned up over Germany. Discovered\u00a0on January 1, 2014.\u00a0\u00a0Diameter: approximately 3 m (9.8 feet); Mass approximately 40 tons.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2018 LA<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 impacted over the Botswana-South Africa border on June 2, 2018.\u00a0Discovered\u00a0on\u00a0June 2, 2018.\u00a0Diameter: approximately 3 m (9.8 feet); Mass approximately 40 tons.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2019 MO<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 impacted off the south coast of Puerto Rico, the Caribbean Sea on June 22, 2019.\u00a0Discovered\u00a0on June 22, 2019.\u00a0Diameter: approximately 5 m (9.8 feet); Mass approximately 200 tons.<\/li>\n<li><strong>2022 EB5<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 impacted southwest of Jan Mayen island in the Arctic Ocean\u00a0at around 21:22\u00a0UTC on March 11, 2022. Discovered roughly two hours before impact. Diameter: approximately 3 m (9.8 feet).<\/li>\n<li><strong>2022 WJ1<\/strong>\u00a0\u2013 impacted over Niagara Falls at 08:27 UTC on November 19, 2022. Discovered at 04:53 UTC on November 19. Diameter between 0.5 and 1.2 m (1.6 \u2013 3.9 feet).<\/li>\n<li><strong>2023 CX1<\/strong> \u2013 impacted over the English Channel, between England and France at 02:59 UTC on February 13, 2024. Discovered about 3 hours before impact.
