To enable this, the <abbr title=\"Canadian Space Agency\">CSA<\/abbr> recently allocated $5<abbr title=\"Million\">M<\/abbr> in grants over 3 years to support post-secondary institutions in the development of Earth observation\u00a0(<abbr>EO<\/abbr>) applications that will address climate change, a priority for Canada.<\/p>\n <\/p>\nAwarded through the <abbr title=\"Canadian Space Agency\">CSA<\/abbr>‘s smartEarth funding initiative, these grants allow academia to be equipped with resources, to collaborate with national and international partners, and to train new highly qualified personnel\u00a0(<abbr>HQP<\/abbr>).<\/p>\n \n <\/p>\n<section> <\/p>\n<h2>Harnessing satellite <abbr title=\"Earth observation\">EO<\/abbr> data to address climate change<\/h2>\n <\/p>\nPost-secondary institutions were invited to propose their projects through an announcement of opportunity published in <time datetime=\"2023-10\">October 2023<\/time>. Applicants had to demonstrate how their ideas will contribute to at least one of the <abbr title=\"Canadian Space Agency\">CSA<\/abbr> priorities stated in Canada’s Strategy for Satellite <abbr title=\"Earth observation\">EO<\/abbr>. Most projects are expected to hire, support, or positively impact Indigenous communities, and all the projects will address climate change. <\/p>\n <\/p>\nIn total, 17 projects<\/strong> were selected, involving 144\u00a0<abbr title=\"Highly qualified personnel\">HQP<\/abbr> and expected to include 69\u00a0students. Examples of projects, to name just a few, include using satellite data to enhance wildfire plume monitoring in Canada, and making use of satellite data to advance our understanding of ocean biological carbon pumps of the Arctic and sub-Arctic seas.
