{"id":783233,"date":"2024-05-30T18:46:07","date_gmt":"2024-05-30T23:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=783233"},"modified":"2024-05-30T18:46:07","modified_gmt":"2024-05-30T23:46:07","slug":"south-korea-targets-mars-mission-with-new-space-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=783233","title":{"rendered":"South Korea targets Mars mission with new space center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-gallery lightGallery\">\n<div data-thumb=\"https:\/\/scx1.b-cdn.net\/csz\/news\/tmb\/2024\/mars-1.jpg\" data-src=\"https:\/\/scx2.b-cdn.net\/gfx\/news\/hires\/2024\/mars-1.jpg\" data-sub-html=\"Credit: Unsplash\/CC0 Public Domain\">\n<figure class=\"article-img\">\n            <figcaption class=\"text-darken text-low-up text-truncate-js text-truncate mt-3\">\n                Credit: Unsplash\/CC0 Public Domain<br \/>\n            <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>South Korea aims to make a Mars landing by 2045, President Yoon Suk Yeol said Thursday, outlining plans to spend about $70 billion over the coming decades on space exploration.<\/p>\n<section class=\"article-banner first-banner ads-336x280\">\n         <!-- \/4988204\/Phys_Story_InText_Box --><\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>The newly created Korea Aerospace Administration (KASA) will lead the drive to make the land of K-pop a new space powerhouse, following the United States, Russia and China.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I have always believed that there is an infinite dream and future in outer space,&#8221; Yoon said on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;KASA will strive to land a homegrown probe on the moon by 2032 and plant the Taegeukgi (South Korean flag) on Mars by 2045,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>South Korea sent up its first lunar orbiter, Danuri, in 2022 on a SpaceX Falcon rocket.<\/p>\n<p>It also successfully launched its homegrown Nuri rocket and placed working satellites into orbit last year after two failed attempts.<\/p>\n<p>Seoul is now gearing up for its fourth launch of the Nuri rocket in the second half of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Modeled after the United States&#8217; NASA, KASA says it will act as an &#8220;aerospace control tower&#8221;, overseeing aerospace policy, satellite development and space missions, including moon exploration.<\/p>\n<p>Key projects will include expanding South Korea&#8217;s participation in Artemis 3, an American-led mission which aims to put astronauts back on the moon by 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The research and development program at the agency will be led by John Lee, who spent 30 years with NASA and was last a senior adviser at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland.<\/p>\n<p>Yoon vowed to &#8220;expand the space development budget by 1.5 trillion won ($1.1 billion) by 2027&#8243;\u2014which would be double the current space budget.<\/p>\n<p>Sacheon city, located in the far south and home to the agency&#8217;s headquarters, will become the &#8220;Toulouse of Asia&#8221;, said Yoon, referring to the southwestern French city, seen as a European space capital, and where Airbus has its headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>KASA is planning a moon landing in 2032, which is a project with Hanwha Aerospace, South Korea&#8217;s largest defense and aerospace company.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our aim is also to support the private sector in space missions as extensively as we can,&#8221; Roh Kyung-won, deputy administrator of KASA, told AFP.<\/p>\n<p>One of their initial projects will involve collaborating with Perigee Aerospace, a South Korean space startup, to test a space launch vehicle from Jeju Island as early as next month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article-main__note mt-4\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t  \u00a9 2024 AFP\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<!-- print only --><\/p>\n<div class=\"d-none d-print-block\">\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<strong>Citation<\/strong>:<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tSouth Korea targets Mars mission with new space center (2024, May 30)<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tretrieved 30 May 2024<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tfrom\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t <\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t This document is subject to copyright.
