Last week, it encountered a rock with unusual coloration and texture that was just out of reach (you can read about it and see pictures here and here). So that Curiosity could learn more about the geology around these rocks, it &#8220;bumped&#8221; \u2013 completing a 0.7-meter drive (2.3 feet) \u2013 to reach a nearby rock that\u2019s big enough to drill! After many discussions over the past week with engineers, geologists, chemists, and more, the team has confirmed this target will be our next potential drill target (pictured). We\u2019ve chosen the target name \u201cMammoth Lakes,\u201d named for a town in California\u2019s Sierra Nevada mountains with basalt columns, hot springs, and waterfalls.<\/p>\n<p><!--]--><\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/blogs\/sols-4212-4214-gearing-up-to-drill\/?rand=772114\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Curiosity is gearing up to drill!
