Canada contributed the scanning lidar <span title=\"OSIRIS-REx laser altimeter\">OLA<\/span> to the mission, which provided unprecedented information on the  asteroid&#8217;s shape and surface features and helped select the best site for sample selection.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Reinvented as <span title=\"Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security - Apophis Explorer\">OSIRIS-APEX<\/span>, the spacecraft will continue to explore the cosmos as part of a new mission to study asteroid Apophis.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<\/p>\n<section>&#13;<\/p>\n<h2><span title=\"Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security - Apophis Explorer\">OSIRIS-APEX<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>The <span title=\"Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security - Apophis Explorer\">OSIRIS-APEX<\/span> mission is designed to observe the asteroid Apophis, which will make a close approach to Earth in <time>2029<\/time>, bringing it within 32,000\u00a0kilometres of Earth&#8217;s surface (about 1\/10th of the distance to the Moon).<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p><span title=\"Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security - Apophis Explorer\">OSIRIS-APEX<\/span> will perform a manoeuvre in which it will:<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>get within 5\u00a0metres of the asteroid&#8217;s surface; and<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>fire its thrusters downward, stirring up surface rocks and dust to give scientists a better understanding of the composition of the asteroid.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n        <\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<\/p>\n<section>    &#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Mission objectives<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Study changes to asteroid Apophis&#8217;s surface, orbit and rotation resulting from Earth&#8217;s gravitational pull <\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Analyze how objects such as Apophis (a &#8220;stony&#8221;
