These students explored behind the scenes at NASA\u2019s Glenn Research Center and Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) in Cleveland after writing the top essays in the national contest.<\/p>\n<p>The competition for kindergarten through 12th grade students focuses on the enabling power of radioisotopes. Students were challenged to learn how NASA has powered some of its most famous science missions and to dream up how their personal \u201csuperpower\u201d would energize their own radioisotope-powered science mission.<\/p>\n<p>Judges narrowed down over a seventeen hundred creative essays to 45 semi-finalists, who received prize packs, nine finalists, who participated in a videoconference with NASA experts, and three winners, who were awarded with a visit to NASA Glenn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m so impressed by the work of these talented young students,\u201d said Dr. Wanda Peters, acting deputy center director at NASA Glenn. \u201cIt\u2019s wonderful to see their interest, innovation, and creativity at this stage in their lives. Our future is bright!\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Rainie Lin, the kindergarten through fourth grade winner; Aadya Karthik, the fifth through eighth grade winner, and Thomas Liu, the ninth through 12th grade winner, toured several research facilities including the Electric Propulsion and Power Laboratory, Telescience Support Center, Graphics and Visualization Lab, and Simulated Lunar Operations Lab. Along the way, they met with engineers and researchers to learn about NASA\u2019s missions and the technologies that are innovating exploration.<\/p>\n<div id=\"\" class=\"nasa-gb-align-center padding-y-3 maxw-full width-full display-flex flex-align-center hds-module wp-block-nasa-blocks-blockquote\">\n<div class=\"grid-container grid-container-block display-flex flex-column flex-justify-center padding-0\">\n<div class=\"grid-col-12 desktop:display-flex mobile:display-block\">\n<div class=\"blockquote-icon margin-bottom-3\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"blockquote-content\">\n<div class=\"margin-bottom-4\">\n<h2 class=\"font-weight-extralight line-height-sm margin-top-0 section-heading-sm\"><span class=\"section-heading-sm\">\u201cI\u2019m so impressed by the work of these talented young students. Accompanied by members of NASA\u2019s Radioisotope Power Systems (RPS) team, the group toured the visitor center and explored the many interactive displays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was our pleasure to host the three student winners of The Power to Explore Challenge, and I hope that this visit will further inspire and motivate them to pursue their interests in science and exploration,\u201d said Carl Sandifer, manager for NASA\u2019s RPS Program. \u201cWe are so impressed by the ideas and quality of the essays submitted this year and we can\u2019t wait to what new ideas student come up with for next year\u2019s challenge!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Power to Explore Challenge asked students to learn about the RPS, one of NASA\u2019s \u201cnuclear batteries\u201d it uses to explore some of the most extreme destinations in our solar system and beyond. Students then wrote about their own power to achieve goals in 250 words or less.<\/p>\n<p>NASA will hold its fourth-annual Power to Explore Challenge later this fall.
