{"id":788894,"date":"2024-09-12T11:43:51","date_gmt":"2024-09-12T16:43:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=788894"},"modified":"2024-09-12T11:43:51","modified_gmt":"2024-09-12T16:43:51","slug":"cme-impacts-earth-sparking-g3-strong-geomagnetic-storm-and-widespread-red-aurora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=788894","title":{"rendered":"CME impacts Earth, sparking G3 &#8211; Strong geomagnetic storm and widespread red aurora"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A coronal mass ejection (CME) produced by a filament eruption early Sunday, September 8, 2024, hit Earth on September 12, sparking G3 \u2013 Strong geomagnetic storming and widespread red aurora. <\/p>\n<p>G1 \u2013 Minor geomagnetic storm threshold was reached at 07:55 UTC followed by G2 \u2013 Moderate at 11:28 UTC and G3 \u2013 Strong at 14:43 UTC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInfrastructure operators have been notified to mitigate any possible impacts,\u201d SWPC said. <\/p>\n<p>G3 \u2013 Strong geomagnetic storm primarily impacts areas poleward of 50 degrees Geomagnetic Latitude. Power systems in these regions may experience voltage irregularities, potentially causing false alarms in some protection devices due to induced currents.<\/p>\n<p>Spacecraft may face surface charging, increased drag on low Earth orbit satellites, and orientation challenges.
