{"id":791950,"date":"2024-12-11T21:35:03","date_gmt":"2024-12-12T02:35:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=791950"},"modified":"2024-12-11T21:35:03","modified_gmt":"2024-12-12T02:35:03","slug":"signing-of-the-implementing-arrangement-to-continue-collaboration-on-satellite-data-comparison-of-trace-gases-among-jaxa-ministry-of-the-environment-national-institute-for-environmental-studies-and","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=791950","title":{"rendered":"Signing of the Implementing Arrangement to Continue Collaboration on Satellite Data Comparison of Trace Gases among JAXA, Ministry of the Environment, National Institute for Environmental Studies, and NASA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"elem_heading_lv2\">\n<div class=\"elem_center elem_heading_lv2_pad\">\n<p><h2>Signing of the Implementing Arrangement to Continue Collaboration on<br \/>Satellite Data Comparison of Trace Gases among JAXA, Ministry of the Environment, National Institute for Environmental Studies, and NASA<br \/><\/h2>\n<p>\t\t\t<!-- \/elem_heading_lv2 --><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elem_paragraph\">\n<p class=\"right\">Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency<br \/>Ministry of the Environment<br \/>National Institute for Environmental Studies <\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t<!-- \/elem_paragraph --><\/div>\n<div class=\"elem_paragraph\">\n<p>\n\t\t\u2003The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Ministry of the Environment (MOE),Japan, the National<br \/>\n\t\tInstitute for Environmental Studies (NIES), and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) have agreed<br \/>\n\t\tto continue their cooperation on the observation of trace gases and air quality using Japan and US satellite data,<br \/>\n\t\tand signed an Implementing Arrangement (IA) regarding this cooperation under the \u201cFramework Agreement Between the<br \/>\n\t\tGovernment of Japan and the Government of the United States of America for Cooperation in Space Exploration and Use<br \/>\n\t\tof Outer Space, Including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, for Peaceful Purposes.\u201d<br \/>\u2003For understanding the distribution of trace gases across the globe, it is important to improve the observation<br \/>\n\t\taccuracy and to increase the observation frequency when using remote-sensing technology.<br \/>\u2003So far, the four agencies have conducted cooperation including cross-calibration of data obtained from Japan\u2019s<br \/>\n\t\tGreenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT) and GOSAT-2, and US\u2019s Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 (OCO-2) and OCO-3,<br \/>\n\t\tand have realized the improvement of observation accuracy. Also, through the mutual exchange of observation data,<br \/>\n\t\tthe cooperation has contributed to understanding changes in the global distribution of trace gases.<br \/>\u2003Reaffirming the importance of continuing the cooperation between Japan and the US, the cooperation is expanded<br \/>\n\t\tto include GOSAT-GW and the Tropospheric Emissions: Monitoring of Pollution (TEMPO), aiming to further improve the<br \/>\n\t\tobservation accuracy and uniformity as well as accelerating the mutual exchange of observation data. Through this<br \/>\n\t\tcooperation, we expect to contribute to the international community\u2019s work on atmospheric composition and the<br \/>\n\t\tco-emission of trace gases and air quality-related gases.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- \/elem_paragraph -->\n<\/div>\n<p><h3 style=\"font-size: 116.6%;\">Comments from JAXA\/MOE\/NIES\/NASA:<br \/>\n\t<\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<div class=\"elem_paragraph\">\n<p>\n\t\tJAXA<br \/>Futoshi Takiguchi, Vice President, Space Technology Directorate I:<br \/>\u2003The trace gases concentration data from the GOSAT series, which has been observing the global atmosphere for<br \/>\n\t\tover 15 years, is widely used and highly regarded around the world. Signing of this Implementing Arrangement<br \/>\n\t\tsignifies that Japan and the United States have decided to continue and further expand the cooperation by adding<br \/>\n\t\tadditional satellite data. Addressing climate change is an urgent issue for humanity, and JAXA will further<br \/>\n\t\tcooperate with related organizations to promote activities such as mutual evaluation of satellite data, thereby<br \/>\n\t\tcontributing to the realization of a carbon-neutral society by 2050.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- \/elem_paragraph -->\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elem_paragraph\">\n<p>\n\t\tNASA<br \/>Karen St. Germain, Director of Earth Sciences:<br \/>\u2003This Implementing Arrangement with Japan formally extends our cooperation and ensures our high-impact<br \/>\n\t\tpartnership will continue to thrive. The close collaboration of our science teams is the fuel that drives the<br \/>\n\t\tsuccess of our missions at NASA and at JAXA. We learn faster when we work together, and this Implementing<br \/>\n\t\tArrangement will enable significant advancement in our study of the atmosphere.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- \/elem_paragraph -->\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elem_paragraph\">\n<p>\n\t\tMOE<br \/>Yutaka Matsuzawa, Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs:<br \/>\u2003This arrangement will continue the existing cooperation between Japan and the U.S. and further strengthen the<br \/>\n\t\tcooperative relationship between the two countries by accelerating the mutual use of data, including the addition of<br \/>\n\t\tnew satellites such as GOSAT-GW. We hope that the scientific results obtained through this cooperation will be<br \/>\n\t\tutilized not only between Japan and the U.S., but also around the world through frameworks such as the Paris<br \/>\n\t\tAgreement and the IPCC, in order to help solve social issues in various regions, such as greenhouse gas reduction<br \/>\n\t\tand air pollution control.\n\t<\/p>\n<p>\t<!-- \/elem_paragraph -->\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elem_paragraph\">\n<p>\n\t\tNIES<br \/>Masahide Kimoto, Ph.D., President:<br \/>\u2003The cooperation based on the Implementing Arrangement signed this time, between Japan\u2019s GOSAT series and the United States\u2019 OCO series, and further with TEMPO, the newest U.S. satellite launched last year, will be an important contribution to the international community, including not only Japan and the United States, but also numerous countries addressing climate change and air pollution issues.
