{"id":792584,"date":"2025-01-13T10:04:02","date_gmt":"2025-01-13T15:04:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=792584"},"modified":"2025-01-13T10:04:02","modified_gmt":"2025-01-13T15:04:02","slug":"esa-welcomes-slovenia-as-23rd-member-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=792584","title":{"rendered":"ESA welcomes Slovenia as 23rd Member State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n\t<span class=\"pillar article__item\">Agency<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<span>13\/01\/2025<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<span><span id=\"viewcount\">49<\/span><small> views<\/small><\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span><span id=\"ezsr_total_26529963\">1<\/span><small> likes<\/small><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Slovenia has celebrated its status ESA&#8217;s 23rd Member State with a day of space activities including a primetime television broadcast from the Herman Poto\u010dnik Noordung Space Technology Center in Vitanje.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Keynote speeches were given by the prime minister of Slovenia Dr Robert Golob and ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher, who had both signed the Agreement on Slovenia\u2019s accession to the ESA Convention on 18 June 2024. Following ratification by the Slovenian government, Slovenia deposited its instrument of ratification of the ESA Convention in Paris to become an ESA Member State on 1 January.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"article__image article__image--left\"><figcaption class=\"image__caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPrime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia Robert Golob speaking at the Slovenian celebration of ESA membership.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dr Golob referred to Slovenia&#8217;s space strategy motto &#8216;small on Earth, big in space&#8217; and described future ambitions for space research and development, as well as exploration and space applications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn space activities we invest\u202fin our future, in research and development, and growth of business\u202fopportunities as well,\u201d he said, adding \u201cSlovenia is determined that it will be great in the universe,\u202fas the potential is great.\u201d Dr Golob also emphasised Slovenia\u2019s successes in Earth observation, of particular importance for a country with diverse geographical features and vulnerability to climate change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ESA Director General promised that Slovenia would now be even closer to space, saying &#8220;Slovenia brings extraordinary capabilities to ESA \u2013 expertise in training international astronauts, advancements in artificial intelligence and data management, and groundbreaking work in micro-satellites. Your scientific excellence and entrepreneurial spirit will undoubtedly enrich our collective mission.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Josef Aschbacher also paid tribute to the Minister and State Secretary in charge of space matters, Mr Matjaz Han, and Mr Matev\u017e Frange\u017e and the Slovenian Space Office, as well as ESA Directors and colleagues who helped advance Slovenia&#8217;s involvement with ESA over the past 16 years.\u00a0In his speech, Minister Han praised the results already being achieved by Slovenia\u2019s rapidly growing space sector.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"article__image article__image--right\"><figcaption class=\"image__caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tESA Director General Josef Aschbacher receiving a gift on stage at the Slovenian celebration of ESA membership.<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Slovenia first signed a Cooperation Agreement with ESA in 2008. Since then, Slovenian companies and research institutes have worked on dozens of contracts among them exploration, Earth observation, and technology projects.
