{"id":794810,"date":"2025-03-28T12:31:04","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T17:31:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=794810"},"modified":"2025-03-28T12:31:04","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T17:31:04","slug":"very-deep-partial-solar-eclipse-of-march-29-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=794810","title":{"rendered":"Very deep partial solar eclipse of March 29, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The partial solar eclipse on March 29, 2025, will be visible across North America, northwest Africa, Europe, and northern Russia.<\/p>\n<p>The instant of the greatest eclipse will occur at 10:47 UTC (06:47 EDT in eastern USA and Canada, 08:47 WGT in Greenland, 10:47 GMT in northwest Africa, and 13:47 MSK in northern Russia), with the Sun positioned in the constellation Pisces. This event takes place just 0.8 days before the Moon reaches perigee, making it one of the deeper partial eclipses in recent history.<\/p>\n<p>The eclipse magnitude is measured at 0.9376, meaning that nearly 94% of the Sun\u2019s diameter will be obscured. The Gamma value, which determines the Moon\u2019s position relative to Earth\u2019s center, is calculated at 1.0405.<\/p>\n<p>This eclipse belongs to Saros 149, marking the 21<sup>st<\/sup> occurrence in a series of 71 solar eclipses. Each event in this Saros cycle occurs at the Moon\u2019s ascending node, with the Moon shifting slightly southward with each successive eclipse.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">March 29, 2025, partial solar eclipse visibility map. Credit: NASA\/SVS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>This deep partial eclipse is preceded by a total lunar eclipse on March 14. Both eclipses fall within the same eclipse season, an approximately 35-day period where the Sun and Moon align closely enough for multiple eclipses to occur.<\/p>\n<p>Partial solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, but the Sun, Moon, and Earth are not perfectly aligned. As a result, only part of the Sun appears covered by the Moon.<\/p>\n<p>However, this does not mean it is safe to observe the eclipse without protection. Looking directly at the Sun, even during a partial eclipse, can cause serious and permanent eye damage.
