{"id":796758,"date":"2025-06-20T03:28:04","date_gmt":"2025-06-20T08:28:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=796758"},"modified":"2025-06-20T03:28:04","modified_gmt":"2025-06-20T08:28:04","slug":"earth-from-space-viennas-danube-divide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=796758","title":{"rendered":"Earth from Space: Vienna\u2019s Danube divide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"modal__tab-content--details\">\n<div class=\"modal__tab-description\">\n<p>A close-up view of Vienna, Austria\u2019s capital city, is featured in this image from April 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Zoom in to explore this image at its full resolution.<\/p>\n<p>Vienna lies in the northeastern corner of\u00a0Austria and straddles the famous Danube River, Europe\u2019s\u00a0second longest\u00a0river, which can be seen running across the bottom right corner of the image.\u00a0A flood-control\u00a0canal flows east of the main river branch, creating a narrow island, approximately 21 km long and up to 230 m wide, which is used mainly for recreational use.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>On the right, a smaller branch of the Danube forms\u00a0a few islands, which are part of the Kaiserm\u00fchlen neighbourhood, in the Donaustadt district. This area hosts the\u00a0Vienna International Centre, one of the four major\u00a0United Nations\u00a0headquarters worldwide, whose modern buildings are visible in the centre of the image.<\/p>\n<p>Next to the UN headquarters, the polygonal roof of the Austria Center Vienna can be seen in light blue. Here, ESA\u2019s Living Planet Symposium \u2013 one of the largest Earth observation conferences in the world \u2013 will take place on 23\u201327 June.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Held every three years, the symposium brings together scientists and researchers, as well as industry and users of Earth observation data, from all over the world to present and discuss the latest findings on Earth science and how Earth observation contributes to both science and society. As many as 6000 participants are expected from up to 119 countries, including at least 800 members of the scientific community.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Organised with the support of the Austrian Research Promotion Agency and Austria\u2019s Federal Ministry of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, the week-long event focuses on how we can work together in the fields of Earth science to promote effective climate action to address the environmental crisis.
