{"id":796994,"date":"2025-06-27T13:30:04","date_gmt":"2025-06-27T18:30:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=796994"},"modified":"2025-06-27T13:30:04","modified_gmt":"2025-06-27T18:30:04","slug":"copernicus-sentinel-4-view-of-nitrogen-dioxide","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=796994","title":{"rendered":"Copernicus Sentinel-4 view of nitrogen dioxide"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"modal__tab-content--details\">\n<div class=\"modal__tab-description\">\n<p>This animation shows how the\u00a0Copernicus Sentinel-4\u00a0ultraviolet, visible, and near-infrared (UVN) spectrometer, mounted on the\u00a0Meteosat Third Generation\u00a0Sounder satellite (MTG-S1), is able to observe nitrogen dioxide over Europe and northern Africa\u00a0(NO2 data kindly provided by CAMS).<\/p>\n<p>Nitrogen dioxide is a trace gas that forms in our atmosphere when fossil fuels are burned.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0UVN spectrometer, on board MTG-S1, orbits Earth in a geostationary orbit. It is the first mission to monitor European air quality from this orbit, which means it maintains its position \u2013 at 36\u00a0000 km from Earth\u2019s surface \u2013\u00a0over\u00a0the equator as the Earth rotates.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The instrument measures sunlight reflected by Earth\u2019s surface and atmosphere, as well as\u00a0light arriving both directly from the Sun. When light passes through the atmosphere, trace gases leave a signature, or \u2018fingerprint\u2019, on the light arriving at the satellite.
