The ESA\/NASA Solar and\u00a0Heliospheric\u00a0Observatory (SOHO) has been\u00a0observing\u00a0the Sun for 30 years. In that time, SOHO has\u00a0observed\u00a0nearly three\u00a0of the Sun\u2019s 11-year\u00a0solar cycles, throughout which solar activity waxes and wanes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
This montage of 30 images captured by the spacecraft\u2019s Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope\u00a0provides a snapshot of the changing face of our Sun. The brightest images occur around the time of solar\u00a0maximum, when\u00a0the\u00a0Sun\u2019s magnetic field is\u00a0twisting\u00a0and reshaping itself. Thanks to this magnetic activity,\u00a0the Sun\u00a0shines more brightly in\u00a0extreme ultraviolet\u00a0light,\u00a0and\u00a0also\u00a0sends out\u00a0streams of charged particles into space\u00a0more\u00a0often.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The individual images\u00a0were taken at a wavelength of 28.4 nanometres\u00a0and\u00a0show gas with a temperature of about two million degrees Celsius in the Sun\u2019s atmosphere, or corona.\u00a0Click here\u00a0to compare SOHO’s\u00a0different views of the Sun.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
