Preliminary analysis by the Brazilian Meteor Observation Network (BRAMON) indicates the object entered the atmosphere at a speed of around 180 000 km/h (112 000 mph). The event coincided with the active Geminid meteor shower period, one of the most intense annual meteor streams visible from Earth.

A bright meteor illuminated the night sky over several states in Brazil’s Northeast on December 8. Monitoring cameras operated by Clima ao Vivo recorded the phenomenon from multiple locations, including the states of Pernambuco, Paraíba and Ceará, showing an intense fireball crossing the sky before disintegrating in the upper atmosphere.

According to the Brazilian Meteor Observation Network (BRAMON), the meteor traveled at an estimated velocity of around 180 000 km/h (112 000 mph). Initial trajectory analysis suggests an atmospheric entry from the northeast–southwest direction, with no evidence of ground impact or fragment recovery.

The luminous phase lasted several seconds, typical of larger meteoroids that vaporize at altitudes of 80–100 km (50–62 miles).

The observation coincided with the Geminid meteor shower, active from December 4 to 20, which peaks around December 13–14. While BRAMON has not yet confirmed whether this object was part of the Geminid stream, the timing and brightness are consistent with sporadic meteoroids intersecting the same region of Earth’s orbit.

Clima ao Vivo’s footage shows a strong terminal flash, likely a small atmospheric explosion as the body fragmented under aerodynamic stress. Such events, known as bolides, occur several times per year across Brazil but are rarely captured with such clarity from multiple stations.

No sonic booms or damage reports were received from civil defense authorities in any of the affected states.

Featured image: Bright fireball over Brazil on December 8, 2025.
