{"id":799781,"date":"2025-12-17T16:45:29","date_gmt":"2025-12-17T21:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=799781"},"modified":"2025-12-17T16:45:29","modified_gmt":"2025-12-17T21:45:29","slug":"proba-3-fills-the-solar-observation-gap-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=799781","title":{"rendered":"Proba-3 fills the solar observation gap"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"modal__tab-content--details\">\n<div class=\"modal__tab-description\">\n<p>The ASPIICS coronagraph aboard ESA\u2019s formation-flying Proba-3 mission\u00a0is able to\u00a0observe\u00a0the Sun\u2019s corona in the gap between the fields of view of solar extreme-ultraviolet imagers and conventional coronagraphs, making it uniquely suited for studies of the inner solar corona.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This time-lapse animation captures a coronal mass ejection (CME) in the top right, combining observations made on 16 July over a period of one hour and a half by three different European instruments aboard different missions:\u00a0the Sun\u2019s disc and low corona (artificially coloured in yellow), as captured by an\u202fextreme-ultraviolet telescope\u202f(SWAP) aboard\u202fProba-2; the outer corona (in red) observed by the\u202fLASCO C2 coronagraph\u202faboard\u202fSOHO; and the inner corona (in green), imaged in detail by Proba-3\u2019s\u00a0ASPIICS coronagraph, filling the gap.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Andrei Zhukov\u00a0from the\u202fRoyal Observatory of Belgium, Principal Investigator for\u00a0the\u00a0ASPIICS\u00a0coronagraph on Proba-3, comments: \u201cYou can see the CME starting at the edge of the solar disc, captured by Proba-2. Then it extends into the inner coronal region, which is now visible to us\u00a0thanks to Proba-3, before reaching the high corona\u00a0observed\u00a0by SOHO.
