ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot, currently on\u00a0the International Space Station\u00a0for\u00a0the\u00a0\u03b5psilon\u00a0mission,\u00a0exercises\u00a0on the CEVIS bike just a few days after her launch on 13 February 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Keeping astronauts healthy during long-duration missions is a crucial challenge as their muscles, bones and cardiovascular systems weaken in the microgravity environment. The most effective countermeasure against the absence of gravity is a daily two-hour exercise routine; this ensures they stay strong and fit to\u00a0accomplish\u00a0their mission, both in orbit and once they return to gravity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
The Danish\u00a0Aaerospace\u00a0Company (DAC) made\u00a0CEVIS, which stands for Cycle Ergometer with Vibration Isolation and\u00a0Stabilization\u00a0System; it\u00a0has\u00a0been\u00a0in use on the Space Station since 2009. A new\u00a0exercise\u00a0device, commissioned by ESA\u00a0and also\u00a0developed by DAC,\u00a0will arrive\u00a0at\u00a0the Space Station in April 2026: the European Enhanced Exploration Exercise Device or E4D, a compact and versatile next-generation in-flight exercise system.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Sophie launched to the International Space Station as part of Crew-12 for a long-duration mission lasting up to nine months. She will carry\u00a0out a wide range of tasks, including European-led scientific experiments and medical research, support Earth observation efforts and contribute to operations and maintenance on the Station.\u00a0<\/p>\n
