{"id":800795,"date":"2026-02-20T07:10:29","date_gmt":"2026-02-20T12:10:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=800795"},"modified":"2026-02-20T07:10:29","modified_gmt":"2026-02-20T12:10:29","slug":"smile-orbit-transfer-and-magnetometer-boom-deployment-artist-impression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=800795","title":{"rendered":"Smile orbit transfer and magnetometer boom deployment (artist impression)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"modal__tab-content--details\">\n<div class=\"modal__tab-description\">\n<p>The joint European-Chinese Smile mission will launch this spring from Europe\u2019s Spaceport in French Guiana, on a Vega-C rocket.<\/p>\n<p>The rocket will place Smile into an almost-circular orbit around Earth\u2019s poles.<\/p>\n<p>Over the following month, Smile will gradually alter its orbit, firing its engines as it flies over Antarctica. Its final orbit will take it 121 000 km above the North Pole to collect information on Earth\u2019s magnetic field and the northern lights, before flying close over the South Pole to deliver its data.<\/p>\n<p>This special orbit will enable Smile to spend about 80% of its time at high altitude above the northern hemisphere, collecting continuous observations of the northern lights for 45 hours at a time.<\/p>\n<p>After Smile has reached this final \u2018science orbit\u2019, it will deploy a three-metre-long boom that carries two magnetometer sensors at the end.
