These islands are R\u00e9union and Mauritius, located about 230 km apart.<\/p>\n<p>R\u00e9union\u2019s volcanic landscape creates a vast leeward zone over the ocean. There, the sea surface is calmer, and from the Station, sunlight reflects off it like a mirror \u2013 a phenomenon known as specular reflection in Physics.<\/p>\n<p>\nProtecting the ocean means preserving one of the essential pillars of the Earth system: a reservoir of biodiversity, a regulator of climate, and a link between continents and cultures. Around the world, we call it by different names, but from 400 km above, there is only one ocean, a truly global one.\u00a0<br \/>&#8212;<\/p>\n<p>Jour 115, orbite 1780 \u2013 \u00c0 l\u2019occasion de la Journ\u00e9e mondiale de l\u2019oc\u00e9an, je partage avec vous cette photo de deux \u00eeles, avec une belle perspective sur le grand bleu de l\u2019Oc\u00e9an Indien. Ces deux \u00eeles sont La R\u00e9union et Maurice, situ\u00e9es \u00e0 environ 230 km l\u2019une de l\u2019autre.<\/p>\n<p>Le relief volcanique de La R\u00e9union explique qu\u2019une grande zone de l\u2019oc\u00e9an soit sous le vent. La surface de l\u2019eau y est plus calme, et vu de la Station, les rayons du Soleil s\u2019y refl\u00e8tent comme dans un miroir \u2013 en physique, on parle de r\u00e9flexion sp\u00e9culaire !<\/p>\n<p>Prot\u00e9ger l\u2019oc\u00e9an, c\u2019est pr\u00e9server l\u2019un des piliers essentiels du syst\u00e8me Terre, \u00e0 la fois r\u00e9servoir de biodiversit\u00e9, r\u00e9gulateur du climat et lien entre les continents et les cultures. Nous lui avons donn\u00e9 des noms diff\u00e9rents suivant les r\u00e9gions, mais depuis notre point de vue \u00e0 400 km d\u2019altitude, l\u2019oc\u00e9an est mondial.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Credit: ESA\/NASA \u2013 S.
