\t\t\t\t\t\t17\/08\/2026<\/span> Watch ESA astronaut Sophie Adenot venture into\u00a0the vacuum of\u00a0space for her first-ever\u00a0spacewalk on Tuesday, 8 August.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Together with NASA astronaut Anil Menon,\u00a0Sophie\u00a0will exit the International Space Station\u00a0from the Quest airlock\u00a0at\u00a0approximately 12:35\u00a0GMT\/14:35\u00a0CEST to repair a crucial piece of equipment\u00a0on the Station.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n The\u00a097th US spacewalk will see Anil and Sophie working about six-and-a-half hours outside the orbital complex, replacing\u00a0a\u00a0Space-to-Ground Antenna (SGANT).<\/p>\n The antenna is a critical communication system NASA uses to\u00a0transmit\u00a0data and\u00a0enable\u00a0high-speed communication between\u00a0mission\u00a0control in Houston and the\u00a0Space\u00a0Station.\u00a0<\/p>\n Sophie has spent more than 150 hours underwater at ESA\u2019s European Astronaut Centre\u00a0(Cologne, Germany) and NASA\u2019s Johnson Space Center (Houston, United States), training and qualifying for extravehicular activities (EVAs).<\/p>\n During the last few weeks\u00a0in orbit, she\u00a0has\u00a0worked intensively on preparing spacesuits\u00a0and\u00a0tools,\u00a0and\u00a0revising procedures.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n On the day itself, Sophie and Anil will be helped into their suits by NASA astronauts Jessica Meir and Jack Hathaway. As Extravehicular Crew Member 1 (EV1), Anil will be\u00a0wearing red stripes on his\u00a0spacesuit, while Sophie\u00a0(EV2)\u00a0will wear a spacesuit without stripes.\u00a0<\/p>\n From inside the Station, commander Jessica Meir and flight engineer Jack Hathaway will\u00a0operate\u00a0the Canadarm2 robotic arm to\u00a0assist\u00a0the spacewalkers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
