{"id":803554,"date":"2026-09-01T09:18:32","date_gmt":"2026-09-01T14:18:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=803554"},"modified":"2026-09-01T09:18:32","modified_gmt":"2026-09-01T14:18:32","slug":"how-the-nancy-grace-roman-telescope-nasas-new-window-into-the-universe-came-to-be","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/spaceweekly.com\/?p=803554","title":{"rendered":"How the Nancy Grace Roman Telescope, NASA\u2019s New Window Into the Universe, Came to Be"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">NASA\u2019s new Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope could unveil clues to the mysterious dark energy that accelerates the expansion of the universe, and discover more than 100,000 planets outside of our solar system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">The key component that makes that possible \u2014 the mirror that bounces light from the cosmos to the camera and other instruments \u2014 comes from a canceled spy satellite.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">A decade and a half ago, prospects for a proposed mission that astrophysicists hoped would shed light on dark energy appeared to be dimming.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">The Wide-Field Infrared Survey Telescope, or WFIRST, was to be NASA\u2019s next big astronomy mission, costing more than a billion dollars to build. Its observations at infrared wavelengths would help astrophysicists precisely calculate the rate of the universe\u2019s expansion over billions of years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">But many astronomers, especially those studying planets outside the solar system, merely yawned, because the proposed telescope\u2019s five-foot-wide mirror would be too small to be of much use to them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was very hard to get much enthusiasm,\u201d said Alan Dressler, who had led a committee that declared WFIRST the top priority for a large space-based mission in 2010.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">Then, the National Reconnaissance Office showed up bearing the gift of larger mirrors, already built but unused.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">For telescopes, both those pointing down at Earth and those gazing outward into the cosmos, curved mirrors act as telephoto lenses, and bigger mirrors collect more light. For a spy agency, this helps reveal smaller details on the ground. For astronomers, bigger mirrors mean they can see dimmer celestial objects, farther away.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">The secretive agency had a couple of mirrors, presumably intended for next-generation spy satellites, that it no longer needed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">In January 2011, a NASA official, Michael Moore, received the phone call offering the mirrors, which are nearly eight feet wide and as expansive as the one used in the Hubble Space Telescope.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">A year later, the space agency accepted the offering. The mirrors opened the door to more ambitious science goals for WFIRST, which was later renamed to honor Dr. Roman, the first chief of astronomy at NASA, who died in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">The telescope is scheduled to launch on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">Mr. Moore was circumspect about revealing any details, but said he had learned several years earlier of the mirrors sitting in storage, unused. \u201cI\u2019m not really at liberty to say who I spoke to at the time,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">He had asked the people working on the classified project if they might be willing to give the mirrors to another agency, like NASA. The answer then was no, and he heard nothing more until the phone call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">\u201cI think they just finally got around to figuring out what they wanted to do, and I was the first name that they remembered,\u201d Mr. Moore said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<div>\n<div><span title=\"ScoopHelper edit storyline button\" class=\"styln-edit-storyline css-1ukzkg8\" data-storyline-uri=\"nyt:\/\/storyline\/2de31dda-2258-4e5d-9dcf-8b8f41f783c3\" data-storyline-inline-module-name=\"live updates\"\/><\/p>\n<div role=\"complementary\" aria-labelledby=\"storyline-latest-updates\" class=\"css-1f8mswd\">\n<div class=\"css-8atqhb\">\n<div class=\"css-1qp3uud\"><time class=\"css-101kej7\" datetime=\"2026-09-01T10:55:16.000Z\"><span>Updated<!-- -->\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span aria-hidden=\"true\" data-time=\"abs\" class=\"css-1stvlmo\">Sept. 1, 2026, 6:55 a.m. ET<\/span><span data-time=\"rel\" class=\"css-kpxlkr\"\/><\/p>\n<p><\/time><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">When the donation was announced in June 2012, an N.R.O. spokeswoman said the hardware was built in the late 1990s and early 2000s. That fits the timeline of the spy agency\u2019s Future Imagery Architecture program, which was aiming to build advanced telescopes looking down at Earth to reveal to intelligence agencies what their adversaries were doing. The program was canceled in 2005.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">John Grunsfeld, a former NASA astronaut, was deputy director of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore when the initial WFIRST design was unveiled in 2010, and he was among those who were disappointed.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">\u201cWe were sort of depressed that that\u2019s the best that the astronomy community can come up with,\u201d Dr. Grunsfeld said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">When he became the head of NASA\u2019s science directorate in January 2012, he found out he could make WFIRST better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">\u201cTo me, it was super obvious from the start,\u201d Dr. Grunsfeld said, that one of the two N.R.O. mirrors would be repurposed for the dark-energy telescope.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">The larger mirror would collect 2.5 times as much light, increasing the scientific payoffs for WFIRST.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">Dr. Grunsfeld also wanted to add a coronagraph, a disk that blocks out the light so that planets around a star can be seen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">That would make WFIRST more appealing to the planet-finding astronomers, and provide a technological proof of concept.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">After consulting with NASA experts, Dr. Grunfeld turned to Matt Mountain, the director of the Space Telescope Science Institute, to put together a small group of scientists and engineers to get an independent opinion on the possibility of building a camera and coronagraph around the existing telescope \u2014 still a secret outside of the government \u2014 at a reasonable cost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">\u201cThat was the challenge he set us,\u201d Dr. Mountain said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">Within weeks, a sprint for a study like this, the answer came back: yes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">The tentative plan was revealed publicly soon after that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">The next hurdle: There was no money in NASA\u2019s budget to start work.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">Dr. Grunsfeld made the case to the Office of Management and Budget that recycling the N.R.O. mirror in a NASA telescope was a prudent use of taxpayer dollars that had already been spent, and the increased capabilities would ensure American leadership in the field.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">\u201cO.M.B. looked at that in some detail and said that sounds like a good idea,\u201d Dr. Grunsfeld said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">Even though the Obama administration proposed deep cuts to NASA\u2019s astrophysics program, there was enough money to get the telescope started.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">During President Trump\u2019s first term, his administration repeatedly sought to cancel the telescope. Each time, Congress, with both Republican and Democratic support, provided the financing to keep it on schedule.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-12m5bll evys1bk0\">The fate of the second mirror is unclear.
