In addition, a dozen trainees, interns, research fellows, PhD students and graduates have gained hands-on experience at the facility.

Key success stories include: enabling the development of lightweight propulsion tanks for the M-Argo CubeSat mission to inspect asteroids; conducting tests on electronics used in ESA’s Quantum telecommunications programme; and supporting the characterisation of stainless-steel specimens that were 3D printed aboard the International Space Station.

Alongside these contributions, engineers at the lab have built a leading centre for powder characterisation, improved the use of additive manufacturing for space hardware, and established expertise in electronics assembly verification and quality inspection of space hardware. These capabilities have proven to be a key resource for European companies as they develop technologies, verify their performance, and bring them to market.

Exploring future ambitions

The ESA-RAL Advanced Manufacturing Lab marks 10 years of operations

Building on the success of the past decade, engineers at the lab plan to further ramp up its capabilities in the coming years.

As it enters its second decade, the ESA-RAL Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory will focus on the characterisation of state-of-the-art materials and space components made by next-generation 3D printing methods, including smart manufacturing, advanced electronics and in-space fabrication technologies – technologies that will play a crucial role in Europe’s space ambitions.

Martina Meisnar, Materials and Processes Engineer at ESA, said, “Over the past ten years, the ESA-RAL Advanced Manufacturing Laboratory has grown into an important centre of expertise, supporting a wide range of innovative developments for European space missions.
