HOUSTON – All four Atlantis crew members worked Saturday to move equipment and supplies between the International Space Station and the multi-purpose logistics module Raffaello.
Commander Chris Ferguson, Pilot Doug Hurley and Mission Specialists Sandra Magnus and Rex Walheim, with help from their station colleagues, were nearing the home stretch in transfer activities. Most of the 9,400 pounds of equipment brought up in Raffaello is aboard the station, and the loading of 5,700 pounds of return items is well under way. Raffaello is scheduled to be unberthed from the station’s Harmony node and returned to the shuttle’s cargo bay early Monday.
Early Saturday Ferguson and Hurley fixed a latch on a door in the floor of Atlantis’ middeck. The air revitalization system compartment beneath the door houses lithium hydroxide canisters, used to scrub carbon dioxide from the shuttle’s cabin atmosphere.
The system will be needed once hatches between Atlantis and the station are closed about 8:30 a.m. CDT Monday. Atlantis is scheduled to undock from the station about 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, and land at Kennedy Space Center just before 5 a.m. on Thursday.
Magnus spent about an hour and a half Saturday morning taking microbial air samples in the station. They will be returned in Atlantis for study and analysis.
Walheim continued his work with spacewalking tools and equipment. Some will be left on the station, and be available for use in upcoming Russian spacewalks from the Pirs docking compartment. It will be about a year before the next scheduled U.S. spacewalk from the station’s Quest airlock takes place.
The astronauts also provided a recorded message as a tribute to Atlantis, the entire Space Shuttle Program and team. In the message, Ferguson spoke about the U.S. flag displayed behind them that was flown on the first space shuttle mission, STS-1. It was flown on this mission to be presented to the space station crew and it will remain displayed onboard the station until the next crew launched from the U.S. retrieves it for return to Earth. It will fly from Earth again, with the next crew that launches from the U.S. on a journey of exploration beyond Earth orbit.

INFORME SOBRE LA MISI�N DEL TRASBORDADOR ATLANTIS: STS-135-17

HOUSTON – Todos los cuatro miembros de la tripulaci�n del Atlantis trabajaron el S�bado para mover equipos y suministros entre la Estaci�n Espacial Internacional y el modulo log�stico de prop�sitos m�ltiples que se lo conoce como Raffaello.
El comandante Chris Ferguson, el Piloto Doug Hurley y los Especialistas de misiones Sandra Magnus y Rex Walheim, con la ayuda de sus colegas en la estaci�n, estaban casi terminando las actividades de transferencia. La mayor�a de las 9,400 libras de equipos tra�dos en el Raffaello est�n ya a bordo de la estaci�n, y el cargar de las 5,700 librad de cosas que retornan a la Tierra est� en curso. El Reffaello ser� desconectado del nodo Harmony de la estaci�n y retornado al compartimiento de carga �til del transbordador a tempranas horas del d�a Lunes.
Temprano el S�bado Ferguson y Hurley arreglaron el cerrojo de la puerta en el piso del compartimiento medio del Atlantis. El sistema de revitalizaci�n debajo de la puerta tiene un compartimiento que almacena los cilindros de hidr�xido de litio que son usados para eliminar el di�xido de carbono de la atmosfera de la cabina del transbordador.
El sistema ser� necesario una vez que las compuertas entre el Atlantis y la estaci�n se hayan cerrado a eso de las 8:30 a.m. CDT el Lunes. Se planea que el Atlantis de desacople de la estaci�n a eso de la 1:30 a.m. el Martes y que luego aterrice en el Centro Espacial Kennedy justamente antes de las 5 a.m. el Jueves.
Magnus se pas� cerca de una hora y media el S�bado por la ma�ana tomando muestras de aire macrobia en la estaci�n. Ser�n retornadas a la Tierra en el Atlantis para estudios y an�lisis.
Walheim continu� con su trabajo con las herramientas de la caminata espacial y el quipo. Algo de eso se dejar� en la estaci�n y estar� disponible para uso en las caminatas espaciales Rusas que est�n por venir desde el compartimiento de acople Pirs. Ser� cerca de un a�o antes de que la pr�xima caminata espacial planeada para un astronauta estadounidense tenga lugar desde el compartimiento herm�tico Quest.
Los astronautas tambi�n proveyeron un mensaje grabado como un tributo al Atlantis y a todo el equipo de NASA en el programa espacial del transbordador. En el mensaje, Ferguson habl� acerca de la bandera estadounidense desplegada detr�s de ellos que vol� en la primera misi�n del transbordador STS-1. Vol� en esta misi�n para ser presentada a la tripulaci�n del al estaci�n y se quedar� desplegada a bordo de la estaci�n hasta que la pr�xima tripulaci�n lanzada por los Estados Unidos la recoja y la retorne a la Tierra. Volar� otra vez desde la Tierra, con la pr�xima tripulaci�n que ser� lanzada por los Estado Unidos en un viaje de exploraci�n fuera de la �rbita de la Tierra.
