Bette Jo Reed, a patient at the Denver Veterans Affairs Medical Center, talks to visiting Air Force Space Command Airmen about her time as a Women’s Air Service Pilot during World War II, Feb. 14. Reed, 89, trained to fly at Sweetwater, Texas, later ferried aircraft around the U.S. to free up male pilots for combat missions overseas. Reed said her favorite aircraft to fly was the AT-6, a trainer aircraft. “It looked just like a fighter and had enough power that you could really have fun with it,” she said. “I loved every minute of my time in the service, the good and the bad parts,” she said.
