Abstract: This presentation provides the motivation for and status of implementation of persistent identifiers in NASA’s Earth Observation System Data and Information System (EOSDIS). The motivation is provided from the point of view of long-term preservation of datasets such that a number of questions raised by current and future users can be answered easily and precisely.
