Abstract: Version 4 of the SMAP Level 4 Surface and Root Zone Soil Moisture (L4_SM) product benefits from an improved land surface modeling system. Surface soil moisture is typically drier by several volumetric percent in Version 4 compared to Version 3, whereas root zone soil moisture is wetter in Version 4 in some regions and drier in others.
