A Skoltech research team led by Professor Artem R. Oganov has discovered why some hydrocarbons are abundant in nature and easy to synthesize, while others are not. They used “magicity” as a measure for assessing the stability of molecules with respect to molecules of only slightly different compositions. This approach helped build a stability map that is in good agreement with experiments and predicts new, potentially synthesizable molecules.
