We are inviting researchers at PhD level or higher to spend time at one of our laboratories or in one of our research teams. What do you need to do? Just tell us about your research project, which lab or team you would be interested in joining and how you would benefit from this experience. The host lab or team will then consider your proposal and get in touch.
“We look forward to hosting researchers with interesting research projects in our labs”, says Dietmar Pilz, Director of Technology, Engineering and Quality. “This will also further broaden our research network”, he adds.
“With our Open Space Innovation Platform, we have been opening up ESA’s research and development for a number of years now, including hosting researchers as part of our R&D projects. With this channel, we make it one step easier for European researchers to access our labs and expertise,” explains Leopold Summerer, Head of Advanced Concepts and Studies Office at ESA. “Researchers need to have an ongoing research project. They benefit from our facilities and our experts, who in turn benefit from getting exposed directly to cutting edge research and can establish direct links with these researchers and their home institutions.”
Any project that would benefit from ESA labs, facilities or expertise is eligible. Projects are assessed by the hosting team or lab and need to fit within their constraints, plans and strategies. ESA’s Technology Strategy provides an overview of the Agency’s main development areas and the overall strategic thrust of ESA R&D work, including the ten technical Competence Domains.
The list of participating laboratories and teams is dynamic and regularly updated given operational needs, constraints and interests. Currently, the following laboratories and teams are interested and open to hosting visiting researchers:
- Data Systems, Microelectronics and Component Technology Team
- Radio Frequency System Engineering Team and Laboratories
- GNC, AOCS & Pointing Laboratory
- Materials, Physics and Chemistry Team
- Automation and Robotics Laboratories
- Space Weather Office Team
- Advanced Concepts Team

To qualify you need to have an ongoing, funded research project and be employed by an organisation registered in one of ESA’s Member and Cooperating States. You also need to be a citizen of one of the Member and Cooperating States. If your project is selected, you will be invited to join the ESA team and laboratory of your choice for a period that could last from a few weeks up to year.
